I was lying down last night when God’s name came to my mind.
It made me think about the different names of God found throughout the Bible and how each one reveals something about who He is — His character, His power and His purpose.
I’m still learning and growing in my faith, and there’s so much more for me to discover. Maybe you’re on that journey too. Perhaps you’ve been walking with God for many years, or maybe you’re just beginning to open your Bible and learn more about Him.

Either way, there’s always something beautiful to discover about who God is.
We know that God is a great God, but did you know there are many names and titles used for Him throughout the Bible?
Each one can help us understand more about His character and the different ways He revealed Himself to His people. From God our Creator and Provider to our Peace and Healer, His names carry such powerful meaning.

I certainly didn’t realise just how much there was to learn!
So, let’s open our hearts and explore eight biblical names of God, what they mean and what they can teach us about His power and purpose.
1. Elohim: God Our Creator
Elohim is the name for God we encounter at the very beginning of the Bible as we read about the creation of the heavens and the earth.
Every time I look towards the sky, observe nature and take in the beauty we’re surrounded by, I am amazed by God’s creation.
And it’s not only what we see around us.
When I think about the purpose God has placed within us and the individual assignments He has for our lives, I am reminded that He deserves all the glory.

2. Adonai: Lord
Adonai means Lord or Master.
What an amazing leader we have!
We have a Lord who sits high yet cares about what is happening in our lives. He listens, guides and directs us towards becoming who He has called us to be.
When we call God Lord, we’re also acknowledging His authority and recognising that His wisdom is greater than our own.
That’s a leader we should never forget.
Have a read of Psalm 16:2.
3. Jehovah-Jireh: The Lord Will Provide
This is such a powerful name to remember, especially during seasons when everything around us seems to be falling apart.
Jehovah-Jireh reminds us of God as our provider.
In Genesis 22, Abraham trusted God during an incredibly difficult test, and God provided. Abraham then named that place The Lord Will Provide.
There may be moments when we cannot see how things are going to work out. Yet God can teach, strengthen, sustain and provide for us through the journey.
Sometimes His provision may not look the way we expected, or arrive according to our own timing, but we can continue placing our trust in Him.

4. Jehovah-Nissi: The Lord Is My Banner
How empowering it is to know God as Jehovah-Nissi — The Lord Is My Banner.
In Exodus 17, after Israel’s battle against the Amalekites, Moses built an altar and called it The-Lord-Is-My-Banner.
A banner could represent identity, protection and victory. For us, this name can be a beautiful reminder of where our help and victory ultimately come from.
There will be battles throughout life, and sometimes we may feel broken by what we’re facing. But we can continue looking towards God, trusting His guidance and remembering that we don’t have to face everything through our own strength.

5. Jehovah-Shalom: The Lord Is Peace
This is truly beautiful.
How many times do we try to find peace from the world around us?
Probably more times than we can count.
But Jehovah-Shalom reminds us that the Lord is peace.
The peace we seek isn’t always about everything around us suddenly becoming perfect. Sometimes, we’re still walking through uncertainty, waiting for answers or facing difficult circumstances.
Yet we can seek a peace from God that isn’t dependent entirely upon what’s happening around us.

6. Jehovah-Rapha: The Lord Who Heals
When we pray for healing over our friends and family, naturally, we want sickness and pain to be removed.
To know God as Jehovah-Rapha — The Lord Who Heals — is a beautiful reminder of the One we can turn to with our pain.
We can bring our prayers for physical healing before Him, while also seeking His help when our hearts are hurting, our minds feel overwhelmed or we need spiritual restoration.
Healing journeys aren’t always easy, and answers to prayer may not always come in the way or timing we hope for. But we can continue bringing our needs to God and asking for His strength, comfort and healing.

7. Jehovah-Shammah: The Lord Is There
How amazing is it to know that God is present?
Jehovah-Shammah means The Lord Is There and appears at the end of the book of Ezekiel.
There are times when life can make us feel lonely or as though we’re navigating everything by ourselves.
But through our mistakes, struggles and difficult seasons, we can continue seeking God.
Sometimes the seas are rough and we simply have to keep rowing. But even through those moments, we can pray for God’s strength and love to keep carrying us forward.
His presence gives us another reason to keep going.
Have a read of Ezekiel 48:35.
8. Jehovah-Tsidkenu: The Lord Our Righteousness
God knows our hearts and minds. He knows our weaknesses, our mistakes and the things we struggle with.
Yet Jehovah-Tsidkenu — The Lord Our Righteousness — points us back towards God rather than relying upon our own goodness.
We can confess our sins, seek God’s forgiveness and allow Him to guide us towards living differently.
There will be challenges along the way. Growing in faith doesn’t mean we’re suddenly going to get everything right.
It’s a journey.
We can acknowledge where we’ve gone wrong, turn back towards God and continue learning to put Him first in everything we do.
It’s not always an easy road, but it’s definitely a road worth travelling.
Have a read of Jeremiah 23:6.
Who Is God?
God is our Creator and our Father.
As I’ve been learning more about Christianity, I’m discovering more about His character — His love, mercy, compassion, holiness, faithfulness and forgiveness.
And these eight names have helped me see something beautiful:
God creates.
God leads.
God provides.
God gives victory.
God brings peace.
God heals.
God is present.
And God is righteous.
When life feels dark, we can look towards His light. When we feel lost, we can seek His direction. And when we feel alone, we can remember that we can turn to Him in prayer.
So whenever you feel lonely or abandoned, remember that God is someone you can talk to. Bring Him your worries, your questions, your mistakes and your hopes.
And if, like me, you’re still learning, that’s okay.
Open your Bible. Read the Scriptures surrounding these names rather than only the individual verses. Pray about what you’re learning and allow yourself time to understand.
These are only eight names of God — very important ones, of course — but there is still so much more for us to discover.
