Praying for our families is incredibly important. Life presents us with many challenges, and we may not always know what our loved ones are going through. Yet, if we speak from the heart and have faith that situations can change, that breakthroughs can happen, and that healing and abundance are just around the corner for someone we love—how can we not bring our prayers to God? How can we not share in the goodness of what God can do?
Praying and reading scriptures together as a family can overcome both natural and spiritual battles. It has the power to heal brokenness and foster unity and restoration. The hope we carry and the love we pour into our prayers can strengthen our relationships with God and with one another.
Even when we’re unsure of what to pray for, simply asking God to cover and protect our families is a beautiful place to start. Here are some family scriptures that can serve as a guide when praying for our loved ones.
1. 1 Thessalonians Chapter 5, Verse 18
In every situation [no matter what the circumstances] be thankful and continually give thanks to God; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.
This is our reminder; that no matter we go through, we have to be thankful for one another’s life and as long as life goes on, we have to thank God for keeping our families.
2. Colossians Chapter 3, Verse 13
Bearing graciously with one another, and willingly forgiving each other if one has a cause for complaint against another; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so should you forgive.
This reminds us, of the importance of forgiveness. God has already forgiven us for our wrongdoings, and he teaches us to forgive one another, in order to live freely and happily.
3. 1 Corinthians Chapter 13, Verse 7
Love bears all things [regardless of what comes], believes all things [looking for the best in each one], hopes all things [remaining steadfast during difficult times], endures all things [without weakening].
With the Love of God, surrounding our families, he reminds us, of the power of unity.
4. Romans Chapter 12, Verse 10
Be devoted to one another with [authentic] brotherly affection [as members of one family], give preference to one another in honor.
This is our reminder; to look up to one another, be an inspiration, show affection and appreciation for one another.
5. Hebrews Chapter 10, Verse 24
And let us consider [thoughtfully] how we may encourage one another to love and to do good deeds.
This is our reminder; to speak life and motivation into one another. We are all here with a purpose, so it is important to encourage one another love and to do good.

6. Psalms Chapter 128, Verses 2-3
For you shall eat the fruit of [the labor of] your hands, You will be happy and blessed and it will be well with you. Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine Within the innermost part of your house; Your children will be like olive plants Around your table.
This is our reminder; that despite the struggles or the setbacks we may face, with God in the midst of our families, we shouldn’t worry, because God provides according to our very needs.
7. 1 Corinthians Chapter 13, Verse 13
And now there remain: faith [abiding trust in God and His promises], hope [confident expectation of eternal salvation], love [unselfish love for others growing out of God’s love for me], these three [the choicest graces]; but the greatest of these is love.
This is our reminder; to keep a hold on faith. When things seem dreary, we must put our families before God and with hope, that all will be well.
8. Colossians Chapter 2, Verses 6-7
Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, walk in [union with] Him [reflecting His character in the things you do and say—living lives that lead others away from sin], having been deeply rooted [in Him] and now being continually built up in Him and [becoming increasingly more] established in your faith, just as you were taught, and overflowing in it with gratitude.
This is our reminder; to live, to love, to pray and to worship, according to God’s will and way. We must bring our families together and teach them the word, so that when they are in need, they turn to God first, with gratitude and comfort.
9. Deuteronomy Chapter 6, Verses 6-7
These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be [written] on your heart and mind. You shall teach them diligently to your children [impressing God’s precepts on their minds and penetrating their hearts with His truths] and shall speak of them when you sit in your house and when you walk on the road and when you lie down and when you get up.
This is our reminder; to speak the word of God into and over our children, our nieces, cousins or nephews, so that their hearts and minds, are filled with his power.
10. Psalms Chapter 91, Verse 4
He will cover you and completely protect you with His pinions, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and a wall.
This is our reminder; that we have a merciful, loving and a faithful God, who will be there for our families, and who will guide, cover and protect them.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I thank you for my family. I thank you for all that you have done, doing and yet to do in their lives. I pray that you cover them from the crowns of their heads, to the soles of their feet. Angels of the four corners of the world, please bless and guide my family on their in and outgoings. May you be their strength, their comforter and their fortress. In the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
To my family, I read: Numbers Chapter 6, verses 24-26:
May the Lord bless you, and keep you [protect you, sustain you, and guard you]; The Lord make His face shine upon you [with favor], And be gracious to you [surrounding you with lovingkindness]; The Lord lift up His countenance (face) upon you [with divine approval], And give you peace [a tranquil heart and life]. In Jesus name, I pray. Amen.
